Strengthening Regulatory Systems: Ghana FDA Hosts LMHRA and ARP Officers for Capacity-Building Tour

As part of ongoing efforts to enhance regulatory oversight within the ECOWAS region, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Ghana is set to host officers from two National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) in Liberia and Senegal for capacity-building regulatory visits.

From 24th to 28th February 2025, four officers from the Liberia Medicines & Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) will visit the FDA, followed by two officers from the Agence Sénégalaise de Régulation Pharmaceutique (ARP) in Senegal from 17th to 21st March 2025. These visits fall under Work Package 3 of the EDCTP-sponsored ECOWAS RegECs Project, which aims to strengthen regulatory systems across the region.

Objectives of the Regulatory Tour

The five-day intensive engagements will focus on:

✅ Assessing Strengths and Gaps: Reviewing the regulatory systems (RS) and clinical trial (CT) oversight functions of both NRAs.

✅ Institutional Development Plans (IDP): Updating the agencies’ strategic plans to align with international best practices.

✅ Capacity Strengthening: Implementing targeted actions to address regulatory gaps and improve operational maturity.

A Collaborative Approach to Regulatory Excellence

The agenda for the tours includes in-depth sessions on Ghana FDA’s regulatory framework, clinical trial oversight, and institutional development planning. Participants will engage in guided reviews of regulatory documents, adaptation of standard operating procedures (SOPs), and hands-on support in developing key regulatory tools.

This initiative underscores FDA Ghana’s leadership in regional regulatory capacity-building and its commitment to harmonizing regulatory frameworks across ECOWAS. Through knowledge-sharing and peer learning, these engagements will contribute to strengthening public health systems by ensuring improved regulatory oversight of medicines and health products.

Stay tuned for updates on this impactful collaboration!
